Why did you choose ENS Rennes ?

There is a collaboration between the IISER and ENS Rennes. We can find similar project in M2S laboratory that I studied in India. So, this choice was quite logical. I would recommend this experience because I am learning a lot, France is beautiful and there are many facilities.

What studies did you do before ? What would you like to do after ENS Rennes ?

I currently follow a five-years degree at IISER (Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research) in India. I will be diplomate at the end of this academic year, after my internship at ENS Rennes. I would like to continue my research work and maybe publish something. After this internship, I will look for a PhD. If it is possible, it could be in the same lab because I really like my work and my professors.

Did you experience a culture shock when you arrived in France ?

Yes, life in India and in France are different. For instance, interaction between colleagues seem to be more formal in France than in India. In India you can go out the lab without saying goodbye and it is completely normal. In France, you pay more attention to this type of conversation, and you can be judged impolite if you quit without a word. Work is also different because you are more independent in France. In India you often take part in PhD students’ project whereas in France you could work on your own project.

What difficulties did/do you encounter during your international experience ?

The most important difficulty is the language barrier. I speak barely French, and it could be uneasy to discuss with people who speak French as a native. But I am going to start French classes so it will be easier. I can also speak English with my colleagues. My apartment is also a bit far from the Ker Lann campus and I am not used to that.
